Tribute to Justice Irene Chirwa Mambilima

With great sadness we acknowledge the passing of the Hon. Irene Mambilima, Chief Justice of Zambia, who passed away on 20 June 2021. We were privileged to hear Chief Justice Mambilima at the IAWJ Auckland conference on 9 May 2021 as a speaker on Judicial Leadership. She spoke with dignity and humility about the struggles faced by women in Zambia to access equal opportunities and justice.

Through her previous work as Director of Legal Aid, Chief Justice Mambilima saw women facing poverty, barriers to education and lack of legal representation. She was dedicated as Chief Justice to developing better access to justice particularly for the vulnerable. The inspiration of this great leader will be deeply missed in Zambia and by her sister judges throughout the world.

A tribute to Irene Mambilima, CJ from the Zambian Association of Women Judges is here.
